Everything else starts here. A thinning crown, dieback at the tips, early leaf drop, mushrooms at the base, a sudden lean: all symptoms. The question is what is causing them.

On Westside properties the answer is usually the soil and the irrigation, not the branches. Buried root collars. Root zones compacted by construction. Lawn schedules drowning trees that evolved to be dry in summer.

A diagnosis is an arborist reading the whole tree and the ground it stands in, then telling you what is wrong. Including when nothing is.

Weight, clearance and light. On a hedge it is the line and the density. On a tree it is the load.

Trimming takes weight off limbs reaching over a roof, a pool or a driveway, and opens the crown so wind moves through it rather than against it. Done well it is invisible. The tree looks like itself, only lighter.

Pruning is structural. The cuts decide where the tree puts its growth for years, which unions carry load, and which competing leaders get resolved before they become a failure.

It pays off slowly, which is why it is worth an arborist. A bad pruning decision is invisible until it is expensive.

The form a tree or a hedge should have in this particular garden. Framing a view instead of blocking it, holding a hedge line, clearing a walk, sitting properly against the house.

Shaping respects the species’ natural habit instead of fighting it. That is the difference between a shaped tree and a topped one.

Trees that have been reaching for light, or that lost a side to a storm or a previous crew, carry their weight unevenly.

Balancing spreads that load back across the crown so no one side is holding the tree up. It is often the quiet alternative to removing a tree someone has already written off.
